Through the evolving Web 2.0 technologies, virtual communities related to mining issues have started to develop. The Web 2.0 environment is, therefore, a new player in mining community relations, as it can shape perceptions, power structures and communities. To foster good community relationships and for corporate risk management, mining companies should monitor these communications tools to better understand the ebb and flow of the emerging communities and their outreach activities. The industry is constantly under scrutiny from media, governmental bodies and nongovernmental organizations, as well as by shareholder groups and financial institutions that require high standards of operation and production that minimizes environmental and social risks.
