The American public likes science and scientists. They said so in a recent survey conducted by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press in collaboration with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). The survey, released in July (www.people-press.org), reported that Americans hold their scientists in high regard, third behind members of the military and teachers. The majority of those surveyed (84 percent) believe that science has had a positive effect on society. They think that science has made life easier for them. And the American public believes that government investments in science, engineering and technology pay off in the long-term.
