The global recession continued to take a toll on the mining industry in January as BHP Billiton joined the ranks of companies forced to cut back. BHP Billiton announced that it would cut 6,000 jobs and close its giant Ravensthorpe nickel mine in Australia, writing off 1.6 billion dollars. Until then, BHP had maintained production and even announced a month earlier that sales volumes were holding steady despite the downturn. Nickel has been one of the hardest hit commodities. "Clearly, their balance sheet is in a respectable position. But they are not immune from the commodity price environment that we're seeing, and earnings are going to suffer," said Neil Boyd-Clark, managing partner at Fortis Investment Partners, Reuters reported.
