摘要

Common clay is a natural, fine-grained material composed of hydrous aluminum silicates. Shale is a laminated sedimentary rock formed by the consolidation of clay, mud and silt. About 142 companies produced common clay and shale in 41 states. Estimated domestic production in 2008 was 17.5 Mt (19.3 million st) valued at 93 million dollars, based on a preliminary survey of the common clay and shale industry. This was a 15-percent decrease in tonnage from 20.6 Mt (22.7 million st) produced, valued at 216 million dollars, in 2007. The leading producer states, in decreasing order by tonnage, were Alabama, Texas, North Carolina, Georgia and Ohio. These five states accounted for 41 percent of U.S. production in 2008.
