Ttensions between China and mining giant Rio Tinto continued to mount in August when China formally arrested four executives of Rio Tinto Ltd. on suspicion of stealing commercial secrets on Aug. 12. Those arrests followed the July 5 arrest of Rio Tinto general manager Sten Hu on similar charges (ME, Aug. 2009, pp.11). China backed away from more serious espionage accusations against the four detainees in a move that Rio Tinto said demonstrated that its employees had done nothing wrong. Previously, the four faced accusations of stealing state secrets, a grave criminal offense that can result in a possible life sentence, The Wall Street Journal reported.
