Calcium carbonate is one of the most abundant minerals on the earth's surface, comprising more than 4 percent of the earth's crust. It was predominantly formed by the long-term deposition of the skeletal remains of planktonlike creatures, mollusk shell or coral reef materials on the sea floor. Changes that occur over geological timeframes result in varying geological histories for these sedimentary materials that may be compressed, relocated, melted, folded and weathered to form the calcium carbonate materials accessible today as a family of limestone rocks. These limestone rock formations may be sedimentary (limestone or chalk, which is rare in North America) or metamorphic (dolomite and marble) all of which are mined and processed to produce a wide range of granular materials with sizes ranging from several centimeters down to less than a micron average diameter - a range of approximately five decades. The applications for these materials are as diverse as the size range and include monolithic products such as headstones, decorative landscape chips, agricultural lime, concrete, joint compounds, paints, plastics, papermaking, food additives and many more uses. As an industrial mineral it is unparalleled in how it is used.
