We are all now painfully aware that the mining industry has a ballooning number of "Free Agents." This new euphemism competes with the other classics such as "made redundant," "downsized," "outsourced," "pink-slipped" and "shown the door." Although some people may actually work for free, most acquired this label due to their newfound freedom from being employed. Having been a "Free Agent" twice in my career, I am intimately familiar with the emotional roller coaster that follows one's dismissal. The mortgage is at risk, one has to cut way back on their beer consumption (or alternatively increase their Scotch consumption), and the extra cost to once again expand the resume is not carbon-footprint neutral. But each time I was inappropriately let go, I found that the next morning the sun came up, the birds chirped and the wind continued to blow. I also found that the Broncos still have not recovered from John Elway leaving, my dog still hates me and that bananas turn brown too quickly. Life will go on.
