The success of Joy Mining Machinery's Optidrive ac variable frequency drive system during the past two years has made the system all but a standard requirement for the company's customers. The Optidrive system offers a single interchangeable part for all Joy underground mining machines. This includes shuttle cars, continuous miners, longwall shearers and flexible conveyor trains. Optidrive integrates the electrical and mechanical systems and the software. Where the motors and drive in the Optidrive system are designed for each other, Joy controls the technology to ensure a compatible system. It maximizes the use of both components instead of using off-the-shelf components that have been modified for underground mining.
