The 17th annual Southern Nevada Minerals Education Workshop was held April 10-12,2006 at Cheyenne High School in Las Vegas, NV. The workshop is presented every year by the Nevada Mining Association (NvMA).There were 133 teachers at the 2006 workshop - 79 for the first time. Randy Griffin, with Chemical Lime and the NvMA's Supplier's Committee, presented 10 teachers, chosen at random, with 100 dollars. The money will offset out-of-pocket expenses that teachers routinely incur in their classrooms. The teachers enjoyed several tours of local sites: Frehner Construction, Red Rock Canyon, the Great Unconformity, Pabco Gypsum, Chemical Lime at Apex, Valley of Fire State Park, the McCaw School of Mines and Cashman Equipment. There was also an optional day tour to IMV Nevada's specialty-clay operation, hosted by Bill Wahl, the Ash Meadows Wildlife Refuge and Devil's Hole.
