World demand for drywall is expected to increase by 4.4 percent a year through 2009. A study by the Freedonia Group said demand should reach 8.2 Gm~2 (88.2 billion sq ft). Gains will vary by region, the study said, depending on building construction and economic growth prospects. Gypsum-based building plasters will also increase, but at a slower rate of 3.7 percent a year through 2009. In most developed countries, drywall is the largest market for gypsum. In developing countries, though, gypsum is mostly used as a cement additive. On a value basis, drywall is of greater significance, the study said. North America accounted for 54 percent of the drywall sales during 2004. But, through 2009, the study said market gains in North America will lag other regions. This will be primarily due to the maturation in the U.S. market as well as declines in housing starts in that country.
