The transformation of Peru's Tintaya copper project from a state-owned company to a private company is under way and the results have been successful. Since Magma Copper Co. assumed operating management in December 1994, production and costs have improved dramatically. To understand the transformation of Tintaya, the transformation of Magma Copper must also be understood. During 1987, as a result of prolonged low copper prices, low-grade ore bodies, inefficient operations and six years of net losses averaging 70 million dollars a year, Magma was spun off as an independent public company. At that time the company's labor relations were among the worst in the industry. Its balance sheet was burdened with debt and management was autocratic and inflexible. Magma was close to being one more casualty on the growing list of US ex-copper companies.
