Even though the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) has been eliminated, some of the Bureau's functions and about 600 of its employees have been absorbed by other federal agencies. About 64 million dollars was provided in the Interior Department's fiscal year 1996 budget to close the agency. And, even though the budget was not enacted, USBM is still slated to close. Facilities and offices slated to be closed include the Western Field Operations Center in Spokane, WA, the Salt Lake City Research Center in Utah, the Denver Research Center's Minerals Availability Office and Intermountain Field Operations Center in Colorado, the Tuscaloosa Research Center in Alabama, the Rolla Research Center in Missouri and the Twin Cities Research Center in Minneapolis, MN.
