Magma Copper made its first major investment in Chile's booming mining industry when it bought the Polo Sur copper deposit in the northern part of the country. Magma bought the deposit in November for 3 million US dollars from Cambior, a Canadian mining company. Magma will also pay Cambior 1 percent of the net smelting returns if the Polo Sur project is developed, according to Fernando Buttazzoni, chief executive officer of Magma Copper Chile.
