Acid rock drainage (ARD) is one of the mining indus-try's most serious and po-tentially enduring environmental problems. ARD is caused when sul-fide-bearing rock is exposed to oxy-gen and water during earth mov-ing activities, such as mining, road building or construction. ARD can result in extensive water-quality impacts. Fortunately, technologies are available to prevent ARD for-mation, but they are not currently applicable to all ARD sources. In some older mines, now closed, we are not able to apply modern ap-proaches. They can continue to pro-duce ARD and represent a signifi-cant liability to mining companies and governments.The high liability costs of ARD carried by many mining companies and governments are a clear indica-tion of the gravity of the problem. In 1997, the estimated financial li-ability at mining sites was estimated to be A 0.9 billion dollars in Australia; C3 dollars to C 5 billion dollars in Canada; and US 2 dollars to US 35 billion dollars in the United States. There is no doubt that, with the increased level of mining and the greater demands for companies to leave a positive legacy from their closed mines, these numbers have increased in the past decade.
