In 2006, SME introduced the Registered Member program. This class of membership was created for members who perform specialized functions relating to reserve consulting and reporting. SME members belonging to this class will satisfy the overseas requirement that to be recognized as a "competent/qualified person," they must belong to a "recognized overseas professional organization" with characteristics as listed below.Members are geologists, engineers and geoscientists admitted primarily on the basis of academic qualifications and experience. Members agree to observe and be bound by a code of ethics. SME has disciplinary powers to suspend and expel members.
