Total U.S. soda ash production in 2007 increased slightly and reached a record high of 11.1 Mt (12.2 mil-lion st). China remained the leading soda ash-producing nation in the world. The U.S. domestic soda ash industry comprised five companies; four in Wyoming operating five plants and one in California with one plant. One of the Wyoming companies has a mothballed soda ash fa-cility in Colorado that continued to manufacture sodium bicarbonate.Soda ash is the trade name for sodium carbonate, a chemical refined from the mineral trona or naturally oc-curring sodium carbonate-bearing brines (both referred to as natural soda ash) or manufactured from one of several chemical processes (referred to as synthetic soda ash). It is an essential raw material in glass, chemicals, detergents and other important industrial products. Al-though soda ash represented 2 percent of the total 68 billion dollars U.S. nonfuel mineral industry, its use in many diversified products results in a substantial contribution to the gross domestic product of the United States. Be-cause soda ash is used to make flat glass and fiberglass for the domestic automotive and construction sectors of the economy, monthly soda ash production statistics canvassed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) are used to develop monthly economic indicators for indus-trial production that measure the U.S. economy.
