Rio Tinto announced that it will invest 2.15 billion us dollars on a major expansion of its iron ore mine in Corumba, Brazil, to extend its iron ore operations beyond Western Australia. The works are expected to boost capacity of the mine more than sixfold, from 2 Mt/a (2.2 million stpy) to 12.8 Mt/a (14 million stpy). New production is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2010. The company will also undertake a feasibility study, to be completed by mid-2009, for a Phase II expansion that would take capacity to 23.2 Mt/a (25.5 million stpy). Rio Tinto has now committed nearly 11 billion dollars toward the development of its iron ore business since 2003.
