Appeals against non-determination have been made in the case of proposals to extend the expiry date of three existing planning permissions for quarrying, from February 2042 to February 2064, by John Wainwright and Co Ltd at Moons Hill Quarry, Stoke St Michael. In June, Somerset CC resolved that these applications would have been refused. Moons Hill Quarry is a long established complex of quarries north east of Shepton Mallet which covers almost 100ha. Previous workings have been consolidated into two areas, separated by the public road from Stoke St Michael to Water lip. The stone being worked is Andesite. It is hard and possesses a high polished stone value, so is sought after for road surfacing. It is, however, overlain and adjoined by other rock which is softer, and has to be removed in order to access the high quality reserves.
