A permit will soon be needed for quarry dewatering.The environment department (DEFRA) has stated that in October 2013 this amendment to the Water Act is likely to come into force. It is also expected that during 2013 the Water Bill will be introduced, bringing water licensing under the umbrella of Environmental Permits. Currently, neither sump dewatering for mineral abstraction nor using the dewatered water for intervening uses (such as mineral washing, dust suppression or wheel washing) need an abstraction licence.
