The UK is facing an energy crisis with record-breaking hikes in energy bills and the threat of blackouts by 2015, according to experts. Yet while many are calling for more investment in renewable energy, some still see it as an unacceptable policy. This debate highlights that, while many forms of energy generation are openly discussed for inclusion in an energy policy -renewables, nuclear, coal, natural gas and now shale gas - there is one glaring omission: underground coal gasification (UCG).
