There are more than 1,300 active and 1,000s of former quarries in the UK, many filled with water. Safety management is crucial, since tragically every year people drown in quarries, even if most deaths are in disused sites often not controlled by the industry. A UK Drowning Prevention Strategy was launched recently to half the number of accidental drownings by 2026.The MPA supports this strategy. On average, 400 people accidently drown each year and nearly two thirds of these fatalities occur in inland waters such as rivers, canals, lakes, reservoirs and water-filled quarries.
