JOHANNESBURG-LISTED Western Areas Ltd, 50 percent owner of the South Deep gold mine in South Africa, sunk to a loss in the three months to December 31, 2005, as the company wrote down the value of undeveloped mineral rights and continued to suffer from its deeply out-of-the-money gold-hedging book. The company posted a net loss of R127.0 million, compared with a R28.8 million net profit in the September quarter, Net gold revenue totalled R131.6 million, as R206.1 million in spot gold sales was offset by a R74.S million charge from the realisation of matured options.
