In March West Sussex County Council approved a major proposal for the extraction and processing of sand and gravel on a H5ha site near the former Lavant Quarry, three kilometres to the north-west of Chichester. The applicants,Tarmac Ltd, proposed to extract two million tonnes of saleable mineral in six phases over a maximum of 15 years with progressive restoration to agriculture and nature conservation. About one half of the site had already been worked, with extraction now proposed in an area of 59ha of unworked land within the western part of the site. Plant and ancillary activities were proposed in the worked out area.
