As vital raw materials for infrastructure and manufacturing, metals are a core commodity in our economy. Global population and consumption continues to grow and so does the demand for metals. It now seems likely that 'peak metal' has already been reached, so we need to find alternative sources for metals and methods for extracting them. According to a report released by the UNEP-hosted International Resource Panel last April, Environmental Risks and Challenges of Anthropogenic Metals Flows and Cycles, global metal needs could rise to up to nine times current demand in the near future. This is due to emerging economies adopting similar technologies and lifestyles to those of current Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development countries.
