Mineral working in the national park is controversial; we get hundreds of responses from residents and sometimes more than 20 speakers at planning committees. We have a delicate balancing act to perform: conserving and enhancing our very special landscape, while also considering communities and businesses. The challenge for our new 15-year core strategy, which has a specific general policy of reducing mineral extraction, is to balance the interests of the minerals industry, environmental sector and local communities.This we had to defend before the inspector.
