Marine aggregate operators in February published a regional environmental assessment (PEA) against which plans for dredging in the eastern English Channel can be judged. The industry has warned that existing reserves, which supply London and the south east, are dwindling and has identified the deeper waters of the eastern English Channel as a potential long-term replacement (see Mineral Planning 88 p.32 & 92 p.42). Six operators, between them seeking ten new dredging licences, have commissioned the PEA to test the cumulative impacts and have formed the East Channel Association (ECA) to fund the work.
