A new scheme of conditions under the Environment Act 1995 at Fauld Mine, Fauld, for British Gypsum was considered by Staffordshire CC in September. The application was an "Initial Review" relating to the older, northern portion of Fauld Mine, which is an "active" site, shown in the plan above. The southern part of the mine is covered by more modern consents and falls to be reviewed separately under the "Periodic Review" procedures in September 2002. T he application was originally submitted in May 1998 but the County Council requested an Environmental Statement.Fauld mine supplies gypsum and anhydrite. It underlies countryside to the west of Burton upon Trent and Covers some 2,000ha. The current review area only related to the area north of the B5234 (1,266ha), the majority of which has already been worked out. Working is currently taking place in the anhydrite rich deposits in the Tatenhill Airfield area south of the B5234. Around half of the anhydrite used in the UK cement industry comes from Fauld Mine and it is therefore a supplier of national significance.
