Natural landforms have developed over hundreds of thousands of years. To copy them exactly in a man made quarry is unlikely to be possible or appropriate in most situations. However, the simulation of natural landforms in the restoration of a quarry can be a useful tool in helping to integrate an obtrusive man made landform (quarry) into the wider landscape. The quarry design must consider a number of restoration techniques and landform simulation (by restoration blasting and other methods) should only be applied in appropriate locations. Where natural landforms are simulated their design ought to consider the use and form of the surrounding landscape and of the final quarry. The landforms should not necessarily be precise replications of natural landforms, but ought to be designed to suit the scale, form, character and use of the quarry and wider landscape setting.
