Kent County Council has approved drilling of an exploratory borehole on agricultural land to test the underlying coal and Lower Limestone Shales for coal bed methane and shale gas.The proposed temporary operation involved the clearance of the site and the formation of a 0.15ha site compound for a period of around 12 weeks to enable the drilling of the borehole to take place. The compound would house a drill rig up to 23m in height, storage tanks, storage sheds, temporary office buildings, a generator, skips, parking and external lighting.The borehole would be drilled to a depth of between 1,000m and l,700m.The first 10 per cent would be 30cm in diameter reducing at depth.The drilling operation would take place 24 hours a day over a period of seven weeks. Laboratory analysis of the core samples would take a further three weeks.
