An application for a 3.7 hectare extension to the north-west of Moota Old quarry has been approved by Cumbria County Council subject to a legal agreement to secure enhanced and extended aftercare. The site was an active limestone quarry established before 1948 but the current permission expired in 2016 and the mineral reserve was now almost exhausted. The site occupied a prominent position close to the Lake District national park 30km south-west of Carlisle. The quarry was designated as a regionally important geological and geomorphological site.
