Industry leaders are divided on a Competition Commission report calling for the "breaking open" of a cement market alleged to have ripped off customers by at least 180m pounds. They spoke out after provisional findings that both the "structure and conduct in the sector limit competition by aiding coordination between certain UK producers". The ongoing market probe will look into the supply of aggregates, cement and ready-mix concrete. "We have provisionally concluded that coordination between the three major cement producers (Lafarge Tarmac, Cemex and Hanson) in the cement market is likely to be resulting in higher prices for all cement users," said the commission.
