Nottinghamshire County Council has approved an application for the excavation of 40,000 cubic metres of coal fines from a lagoon at the former Bilsthorpe Colliery, which closed in 1997 and which had been partly redeveloped into a business park. The application site was on land which had been the subject of an application for an energy centre called in by the secretary of state. The former colliery surface had regenerated naturally with grassland, shrubs and trees and was designated as a local wildlife site.
