The winning and working of sand and gravel, restoration to a lake and landscaped parkland with afteruse as water ski facility at Box End, Kempston, was refused permission by Bedfordshire CC in July, against officer advice.The 39ha application site was to the south of Bromham and west of Box End village. The site is arable grassland and part of the flood plain for the river Ouse. The extraction would have yielded a reserve of 325,000t of saleable sand and gravel, over a period of 2-3 years for coarse concreting aggregate, concreting sand, sub base construction, drainage works and pipe bedding. Restoration of the site would have resulted in the creation of a water area of 10.7ha, set in landscaped parkland with woodland and water meadow, riverside walk and areas of open land for informal use. The water area would be suitable for various leisure/recreation uses specifically water sports with boats and cable powdered water skiing. An Environmental Statement accompanied the application.
