Determination of new conditions for underground mining of haematite at Florence and Ullcoats Mines, Egremont, for Egremont Mining Co Ltd was considered by Cumbria CC in October. Additional information had still not been provided and an up to date scheme of conditions could not be further delayed.Florence and Ullcoats Mines are linked underground and are worked as a single mine from the Florence pit head. The mine is covered by 2 permissions granted in 1950 for the production of iron ore from underground workings. The total area of the two permissions is some 176ha, although the review submission indicated only about 29ha were proposed to be worked with a further 13ha identified as the plant area and for the deposit of waste. Workings will take place in an easterly direction from Florence Mine towards the former Ullcoats mine, now an industrial estate. They will involve the re-opening of old workings to extract haematite ore from room and pillar workings developed prior to 1920. Proposed conditions would permit working until 2042 and allow the import of inert waste to fill subsidence areas and to make safe 9 mine shafts as there is insufficient mine waste produced to achieve this objective (all mine waste is currently backstowed underground).
