Proposals aimed at exploring the viability of a small colliery have been refused by Neath Port Talbot Council because the applicant had not provided enough information about the site's hydrological and hydrogeological conditions. The site was part of a coniferous woodland plantation 2.8 kilometres south-west of Ystalyfera. The application was an initial feasibility exercise and proposed to establish a working platform and limited underground exploratory driveage to ascertain the quality and nature of the coal measures surtounding the Upper Pinchin seam. It was proposed to construct a four-metre wide entry for a length of 50 metres after building a level platform to accommodate a temporary office and coal stocking area.
