Far too often mining engineers think of blasting purely in terms of the cost of the explosive, blast patterns, and safety issues. If the explosive is inexpensive and has good blasting characteristics for the mineral deposit, they think of little else. However, putting the explosive in the ground requires drilling. And that means that your drilling equipment is just as critical as anything else in the blasting process. In fact, if you aren't taking care of your drilling equipment, your blasting schedule could be put in jeopardy and your operations costs will skyrocket. Just to show you how a small drop in the efficiency of a blast hole drill will affect the bottom line, consider a diesel drill that is operating at 90 percent efficiency. At 90 percent efficiency the mine is only getting 1,800 hours of work out of the drill between overhauls. That's one to two percent of the initial cost of the equipment for every 2,000 hours of operation. Therefore, if the drill costs 75,000 dollars, and is expected to run 4,000 hours a year, the additional cost will be 3,000 dollars a year in additional maintenance alone. This doesn't include the economic costs of not running your mine and equipment at full capacity or the risk of equipment damage due to abuse as operators try to keep up with operational schedules.
