In December Warwickshire CC permitted variation of a condition to allow amendment of the final site landform at Griff Quarry, Nuneaton, known as Griff No.4, for Hanson Aggregates. This would enable all exploitable mineral reserves within the quarry to be extracted. The revised working proposals would release an additional 1Mt of mineral for extraction. The proposal would involve moving and recontouring an existing overburden mound located along the western boundary of the quarry to expose additional rock. Th overburden would be relocated within the quarry void. The proposal would provide the quarry with a mineral reserve of around eight years at current output. The existing approved final quarry landform upon completion of mineral extraction at Griff No.4 involved leaving a large block of rock along the western boundary of the site sterilised by the overlying overburden mound. A condition required the quarry to be infilled upon cessation of mineral extraction which would almost certainly result in permanent sterilisation of the mineral if not worked at this stage.
