The date 22 June 2014 marks the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn, where the Scots, led by King Robert the Bruce, routed the English forces of Edward II. As we enter 2012, great play is being made by the media that Scotland's first minister,Alex Salmond,wiil take the nation to the polls on independence from the UK on that day.However, the outcome may depend on the performance of the Scottish economy over the next 30 months. Elected with an overall majority in the May 2011 elections, the previously minority Scottish National Party government seems determined to put its stamp on the economy. It has committed to some ￡60 billion of infrastructure projects, without which it believes long-term sustainable growth will be constrained.Major projects requiring the provision of substantial volumes of aggregates from central belt quarries include the Forth replacement crossing and the M8-M73-M74 improvements project.The latter has been procured under a non-profit distributing contract to deliver economies of scale and efficiencies for the public purse.
