At the EU level, Directive 2011/70/Euratom establishes a framework to ensure responsible and safe management of radioactive waste by member states. In the UK the framework for managing higher activity radioactive waste through geological disposal is set out in the government white paper published on 22 July 2014.This paper followed a public consultation in 2013 on amendments to the existing siting process established in 2008 for a geological disposal facility (GDF).
