Extraction of sand and gravel and restoration to meadows and reedbeds, involving importation and disposal of inert waste at Gallows Hill, Barking was approved by Suffolk CC in March for Lafarge Aggregates Ltd. The site was included within an Area of Search in the Adopted Suffolk Minerals Local Plan, and the application was accompanied by an Environmental Impact Assessment. Sand and gravel extraction was proposed from a net area of 18.6ha within a site area of 37.4ha. All aggregate raised would be taken directly to the applicant's processing plant at Broomfield depot, Barham via the same route as currently used from the Darmsden quarry which is now almost worked out. It is proposed to remove 1.05Mt of sand and gravel in 10 phases over a period of 10 years.
