In May Somerset CC approved the winning and working of limestone, creation of a tunnel under the A361 and associated plant and works at Cloford and Crees Quarries, Holwell, by Aggregate Industries UK Ltd. The majority of the site already benefited from permission to extract minerals. The proposal was accompanied by an Environmental Statement. The application was to work limestone from a 44ha area to the south of the A361, adjacent to, and to the south west of, the existing Holwell Quarry complex. It was proposed to work the quarry in 4 phases until 2068. Phase 1 (2008-2015) involved the creation of a screen bund in the south west corner of the site; creation of two tunnels, one under the A361 and another under the access track (and public right of way) that crosses the site; and the removal of oolitic limestone from the eastern part of the site. Phase 2 (2015-2027) involved working the eastern part of the site to 120m AOD and removing the oolitic limestone from the western part of the site. Phase 3 (2027-2039) involved working the remainder of the site to 120m AOD. Phase 4 (2039-2068) involved working the entire site to 40m AOD. The restoration phase involved allowing the two quarry voids (separated by the existing access track) to refill with water to about 120m AOD. The stone would be processed in the existing plant in Orchard Quarry north of the A361.
