John Pears, a Partner in Wardell Armstrong and the Deputy Crown Mineral Agent, explains the nature of recently permitted dimension stone mining on Portland.On 2 November 2001, Dorset County Council resolved to grant planning permission for a new site for the extraction of Portland Stone from a part of the Isle of Portland known as Stonehills (see Mineral Planning 89 p.56). This decision heralds what should be the beginning of a new era in the production of this national important resource by underground mining, with all the environmental advantages such an extraction technique brings with it.
