Proposals to extract sand and gravel as an extension to the Norton Disney Quarry with restoration to landscaped lakes by RMC Aggregates (Eastern) Ltd were approved by Lincolnshire CC in May. Planning permission was granted to extract 2.46 Mt of sand and gravel from land at Tonge's Farm as an extension of the Norton Disney Quarry where it was anticipated that the existing permitted reserves would be exhausted by 2005. The proposal would extend the life of the quarry by 11 years (at a rate of production of around 250,000 tpa). The site covered an area of 54 ha that included the existing plant site (which would be retained for the duration of the development), Tonge's Farm and an interconnecting strip of land which would be used for the conveyor system. Although the Tonge's Farm part of the site extended over an area of 48.9 ha, mineral extraction would be confined to an area of 27 ha with the balance being excluded from working due to archaeological and environmental constraints. The site would be worked in eight phases using a hydraulic excavator, a mechanical loading shovel and a movable field conveyor system.
