Permission was issued in January by Neath Port Talbot CBC for opencast coaling at Ynys Dawley opencast site, Nant y Cafn, Seven Sisters, and reclamation of Dillwyn Tips site, near Nant y Cafn, Neath for Newscheme Ltd. One letter was received objecting to the development although 70 properties were consulted. The objection claimed the Dulais Valley had already become unsightly with a number of opencast sites and current operations were run badly, and that local people had "given up" opposing opencast because they felt their views were not being listened to.The proposed 26ha Ynys Dawley opencast site was in the southeastern flanks of the Dulais Valley 2km south of Seven Sisters between 180m and 365m AOD. In tandem with the opencast proposal a scheme was proposed to regrade, reclaim and landscape parts of the Dillwyn Tips close to Nant y Cafn village. These tips cover some 4ha of land and form a linear structure of colliery shale tips close to the A4109 road. The application was accompanied by an Environmental Statement.
