A proposed 4.6Mt extension to Shardlow sand and gravel pit by Hanson Aggregates Ltd has been approved subject to a legal agreement by Derbyshire CC. A planning application to extend the existing Shardlow Pit was originally submitted in September 2000 and included proposals for the land to be reclaimed with much of the site being left in water. Response to the publicity and consultations was that the infilling and restoration of the whole of this site for agriculture would be preferable. There were 193 objections from residents of Weston-upon-Trent and Aston-on-Trent on the basis that there was already too much quarried land being restored to water and restoration should be as fields. The extension site is within Skin of East Midlands Airport, and the Civil Aviation Authority advised against approval as the proposed water areas would attract birds that could be a hazard to aircraft.
