Paul Wilcox, Secretary to the Planning Officers Society Minerals & Waste Topic Group, report on recent activity. Part of the role of the Minerals and Waste Topic Group is to seek to influence policy and practice through liaison with other bodies. Last year the Group met the Wildlife and Countryside Link to discuss the ODPM's consultation paper on the revised aggregates guidelines and the operation of the Sustainability Fund (see Mineral Planning 93 p. 53). There were concerns about the emphasis placed on spending monies in 2002/03 when the Fund guidelines had been very slow to emerge. There were also concerns that too much emphasis was being placed on funding "research" projects rather than on projects which sought to reduce the use of primary aggregates.
