Planning permission was sought by J Curtis & Sons for the extraction of 350,000t of sand and gravel from 10.6ha of land known as the 'Camas Land' at Sutton Wick, land identified in the Oxfordshire Minerals and Waste Local Plan as an area where the principle of new sand and gravel working is accepted. A second application for the extension of time for mineral extraction and processing at Sutton Wick involved the retention of the gravel processing plant which would be used for mineral from the Camas land. The application site was south of Abingdon near Sutton Courtenay flanked on the east by the landfill site operated by RMC. Excavation of the Camas land was expected to last between 4-6 years and the site would be dewatered in order to enable the full depth of mineral to be efficiently removed and the regrading of faces achieved. The restoration would be to 3 lakes: for nature conservation, an agricultural reservoir and a fishing lake. The whole application site would be subject to a 5 year aftercare scheme followed by longer term management of the nature conservation area for 15 years.
