In May an Environment Agency consultation gave 28 days to comment on criteria proposed to measure the success or failure of a tyre-burning trial at Castle Cement's Ribblesdale plant in Clitheroe, Lancashire. A series of 'critical success factors' (CSFs) were drafted by Castle Cement and were subject to public consultation. Castle Cement applied for permission to trial the use of tyres as a 25 percent energy replacement in Kiln 7 at Ribblesdale. Results of the trial will be compared to the CSFs once they are finalised. If Castle Cement performed satisfactorily, the Agency will permit the continuous use of tyres as fuel at Ribblesdale.
