Future working and restoration proposals including an extension of clay extraction on land to the west of Swanage Brickworks, Godlingston for Ibstock Brick Ltd were approved in May by Dorset CC. The application was accompanied by an Environmental Statement. The existing Godlingston Brickworks site is 1 km north west of Swanage immediately south of Ulwell. The permitted operations cover an area of some 4.8 ha and comprise 3.5 ha of current clay working and stockpiling and in the south-eastern corner of the site a 1.3 ha processing area with a brick factory, with 17m high chimneys. The existing works produces specialist, hand-made bricks and is the only brickworks left in Dorset which manufactures clay bricks. There are permitted reserves for 7 years at the current extraction rate of 6,000 cu.mpa.
