Proposals by Hanson Quarry Products Europe Ltd for a small extension to its existing operations at Cassington with revised restoration to involve importation of inert waste materials to create a reed bed, was refused in July by Oxfordshire CC, against officer recommendation. The 14ha extension would provide an additional 680,000t of sand and gravel; the current output is around 450,000tpa. Extraction would begin in the summer of 2004 with completion of restoration by summer 2012. The mineral would be dug dry following dewatering; restoration would be to a reed bed habitat. Importing inert waste materials would build up certain areas to the optimum level to allow reeds to grow, and to maintain existing ground water movements within the area. This was particularly important considering the close proximity of Yarnton and Pixey Meads, a site of international ecological importance, which requires a constant water regime.
